Bariatric Surgery Travel Itinerary: What to Expect

Knowing what your trip may look like day by day can make bariatric travel feel much more manageable. A simple itinerary helps patients understand when they will arrive, when surgery takes place, how recovery is monitored, and when they can expect to return home.

While every patient’s experience is individualized, most bariatric surgery trips follow a similar structure. From airport pickup to final medical clearance, each day is designed to provide safety, coordination, and support throughout the process.

A four-day overview of your surgical trip

Day 1: Arrival
Patients typically arrive at San Diego International Airport, where transportation is arranged for transfer to Tijuana. After hotel check-in, patients may receive orientation details, schedule reminders, and final instructions for the next day. This first day is usually focused on settling in, resting, and preparing mentally and physically for surgery.

Day 2: Surgery Day
Patients check in at the hospital early in the morning for pre-operative testing, evaluations, and final medical review. You will meet with your surgeon and anesthesia team before the procedure. Bariatric surgery commonly takes between 45 and 90 minutes, depending on the case and procedure type. After surgery, patients are closely monitored and typically remain in the hospital overnight.

From arrival to departure, every step is coordinated

Day 3: Recovery
The recovery day usually includes surgeon rounds, progress checks, medication review, and guidance on hydration and nutrition. Patients may begin a clear liquid plan as tolerated, along with light walking to support circulation and recovery. Education regarding medications, diet progression, and discharge planning is also commonly provided before returning to the hotel.

Day 4: Departure
Before heading home, patients typically receive a final medical check-up, post-operative instructions, and any necessary medications or recovery guidance. Transportation is then arranged back to San Diego Airport for departure. By this stage, patients usually have a much clearer understanding of the next steps in their recovery at home.
